Cavy Shows thru the Year - July to December |

Practically every weekend all year round there will be at least one cavy show taking place in the UK. Many of the keen cavy fanciers travel from one end of the country to the other to exhibit, particularly to the ‘prestige’ events, some of which are mentioned below.
For more information on when and where shows are held in the UK:
Southern Cavy Club![]() SS& B Cavy Club hold shows around the year, where most breeds are shown, including this Texel belonging to Heather Saunders and a young Peruvian cavy shown by Julia White
| A collection of young Lilac cavies seen waiting for the judges verdict at Southampton, Salisbury & Bournemouth Cavy Show 24th July 1999, |
| At this popular venue in July there were some unusual breeds, and combinations of breeds and colourings which are not often seen. Above we see a Rex cavy (or Teddy if you are in the USA) being examined carefully by the judge, and also present were a number of Texels, this one being a youngster (16k). We have seen many satins, and have bred satin goldens and saffrons for some time, but hadn't previously seen a golden satin Rex (26k) . Apparently the dark markings of Himalayan cavies, here in black, but also found in chocolate, lighten in warmer temperatures which suggests that this July day was a cold one for this Himalayan cavy.(14k) Seen here is a Dutch cavy (14k) whose dark markings are from the Silver Agouti breed, whilst this one appears to be a satin slate colour (27k). ( Please let me know if I have identified this colour incorrectly !) Finally a fine example of a self chocolate (7k) on the judge's rostrum. Despite being chocolate definitely not edible to any true cavy fancier ! | WARRINGTON CAVY SHOW, LANCASHIRE JULY

UK NATIONAL CAVY CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW This show is held at Northampton in July, and in 1998 had over 650 cavies entered. Crested cavies with the crest in white, contrasting with the body colour are known as American Crested whilst those with the crest in the same colour as the body are known simply as 'Crested' or English Crested Amongst the other breeds to be seen are this Texel with an exceptionally long coat, and here we see a golden roan and a chocolate roan . |
| NORTH EAST CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW -SEPTEMBER or OCTOBER | The North East Championship show follows in September or October, in recent years held at Redcar, Cleveland, with a vast selection of rabbits. Self blacks (21k) are usually seen here in numbers in their beautiful shiny coats, but some excellent coronet (17k) cavies are usually there, and abbysinian (10k) adults and youngsters (20k) are favourites of many County Durham breeders. Silver agoutis are also popular |
| Then for some of it is a trip over the border to Dunblane, Near Stirling, to the Victoria Hall for the Scottish Championship Cavy Show in Mid October each year. The Rex Cavy Club has its own competitions as part of this show, so there are always a good showing of this breed (19k) in a variety of colours. This exhibit was amongst the winners at the 1998 show. | ![]() The Victoria Hall, Dunblane SCOTTISH CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW OCTOBER |
![]() This Chocolate Dalmatian is from the highly successful Alston & Joyce stud. It was overheard that the Dalmatian & Roan Cavy Club is to stage classes at the October 1999 Show at Dunblane, so no doubt there will be a good showing in thse breeds next year also. | ![]() The line up for the 'Best Adult Self' at the show which was won by the Self Cream cavy As you might expect Tartan rosettes were awarded at the show. A breed not found so often is the Harlequin. Winner of the 1998 show was this Self black youngster owned by Mr Bryan Mayoh. |

Blackpool Cavy Club organises a number of well attended shows throughout the year, and we found a number of interesting exhibits in November 1997, including the Alpaca seen here. This animal looks a bit bored with the proceedings. The camera may have played tricks with the colouring of this lilac cavy. This dalmatian cavy was exhibited by Alston & Joyce, who take some beating in this breed. In fact this animal achieved best in breed at the show, which included special classes run by the Dalmatian& Roan Cavy Club. The Dark Eyed White is a breed which is not seen so often, this specimen won Best in Breed at the August 1998 show for Sandills Stud from Southampton. |
| Chris Fort was also there, (remember her champion coronet 'Summer' at Doncaster ? - this time winning best non-self with her Sheltie cavy 'Camilla' (Mmmm , maybe she does look a bit like Prince Charles's lady friend). Not to be outdone, Ken Yates and Kim Holmes were showing this Magpie cavy, a breed not seen too often. | |
